Our Club

The Horsham Golf Club is the region's premier golfing, function and entertainment venue. Come for the golf and enjoy some of the other great facilities the club has to offer.

A long and proud history in the Wimmera

Come out and enjoy one of the worlds most loved sports with the delight of being able to play at one of the best regional golf courses in Australia right in the heart of the Wimmera.

1898

The Horsham Golf Club was established, situated in a paddock owned by the Langlands family centred on the Gardenia Street area.

1924

The Club purchases 34 hectares in Horsham East, across the river from Hamilton Street.  Access via a swing-bridge.

1946

The club sold the 34 ha and bought 64 ha of land at Haven on a wonderful sand-belt. The original course architect, Sam Berriman, produced a design which he considered one of his masterpieces. Three years of mostly volunteer work followed. Bulldozers carved the layout from the scrub, sheep manure was spread over the fairways and couch grass sown.  Trees were planted, dominated by the native white flowering tea tree and pines to break the wind.

1947

Greens and bunkers established.

1949

A Dam was constructed and a reticulation system saved the onerous task of carting water to the course.  Sam Berriman’s design refined by architect Kevin Hartley and legendary green-keeper Max Ward. This was also the first year that members played the course.

1959

Clubhouse built and club registered under the Licensing Act.

1975

Clubhouse extended to enable catering for functions.

2000

New state-of-the-art clubhouse built with the ability to cater for functions up to 300 people. Immediate success as weddings and other functions see the facility booked out up to 12 months ahead.

2009

The club has gone through many changes over the years but none like the devastating bushfires in 2009. 15,000 trees and shrubs were lost, the clubhouse, Pro Shop, machinery shed and equipment were completely destroyed and the course decimated.  Since then, with the support of golf clubs from across Australia and the State Government, the committee has led staff, contractors and volunteers in rebuilding our beautiful facilities.

A Bright Future

“One of Country Australia’s Great Golfing Experiences” with its suburb challenging 18 hole course,  home to a fully stocked on-site pro shop and a welcoming bistro and bar, with the more modern clubhouse becoming the social focus for the Club as well as the wider community.

A course master plan prepared by course architects Crafter and Mogford has been adopted and while narrow, tree-lined fairways may be gone, in their place is a modern, world class golf course suited for average and talented golfers, alike.

Looking towards the future, Horsham Golf Club wants to improve the facilities for golfers, as well as maintain the strong membership numbers and regular golfers that play the course. Over the last three years the board, club staff and volunteers have worked hard to bring the club back to it’s former glory.

The club is in plans to install an undercover driving range with new teaching facilities to help new golfers and current members enjoy their practice more and continue to improve the quality of the already high standard course.

Now well into its second century of operation, the club’s future has never looked brighter.
